Passport renewal can be done in several situations:
- If the passport's validity has expired.
- If the passport is expiring soon (within the next 12 months).
- If the validity expired more than 3 years ago.
- If the passport is damaged or lost.
- If you want to update your details.
- If you want to change your name.
- If you want to add or change your spouse's name.
Passport Expired
- If your passport has expired, expired more than 3 years ago, or is about to expire within the next year, you can renew it by filling out an online application form on the Passport Seva Website.
Damaged Passport
- If the details mentioned in your passport are not readable or the photo is damaged, it may cause problems at immigration. To prevent this, you should apply for a passport renewal.
Lost Passport
- If you have lost your passport, you can apply for renewal.
- For this, file an FIR (First Information Report) at the nearest police station and obtain the GD number.
- If living abroad, report the loss to the Indian Embassy.
Changes in personal details
- If you want to update any details in your existing passport, such as name, birth date, address, gender, and others, you need to apply for renewal.
- To change your name (other than due to marriage, divorce, or re-marriage), you must provide a Gazette notification of the concerned state or a newspaper clipping
- The name change must be advertised in two newspapers (one in English and one in the local language)
Adding or Changing Spouse's name
- To add, remove, or change your spouse's name, you need to apply for a passport renewal.
- For this, you need to provide a marriage certificate or divorce certificate, as applicable.
Minor/Adult Passport Renewal
- Minor's passport remains valid for 5 years or until the minor turns 18, whichever is earlier.
- It must be renewed every 5 years or until the minor attains adulthood.
- PAN Card / Aadhaar Card photo must be updated.
Address Change
- To change the address in the passport, you need to apply for passport renewal, with the following acceptable documents: -
- Water Bill
- Telephone (landline or postpaid mobile bill)
- Electricity Bill
- Income Tax Assessment Order
- Election Commission photo identity card
- Proof of gas connection
- Certificate from the employer of reputed companies on letterhead
- Spouse's passport copy
- Parents' passport copy (first and last page) in case of minors
- Current address on Aadhaar card
- Rent Agreement
- Current bank account passbook with photo (only Scheduled Public Sector Banks, Scheduled Private Sector Indian Banks and Regional Rural Banks)
Provision of time for Passport Renewal
- Passport holders must renew their passports at least approximately 1 year or 6 months before expiry.
- Even if the passport holder renews his passport after expiry or after 1-3 years, the process remains the same.
- Minor's passport can be renewed every 5 years or when they turn 18, whichever is earlier.
Passport Renewal Process
- The passport renewal procedure is similar to applying for a New Passport, whose process is given as: -
- Visit the Passport Seva Website.
- Fill online form (for renewal)
- After submitting the form, pay the Passport fees.
- Schedule an appointment at the nearest passport office.
- Carry all original and photocopy documents on the day of the appointment.
- After successful police verification, the passport is delivered to your address through speed post.
