- Police Verification process for Indian Passport in India is an important process.
- Police verification process involves the local police visiting your given address to verify your identity, address and background and also to check your criminal records.
- The police verification process ensures that the applicant has no previous or present criminal record and resides at the mentioned address.
Police Verification Process:
Note : Police verification process is same for Passport / Police Clearance Certificate.
- Submission of application form at Passport Office: -
- Once the applicant's biometric and document verification is done at the passport office, the police verification process is started.
- An email regarding initiation of police verification request is sent to the applicant on his/her registered email address.
- Verification request is sent to police :-
- In police verification process, applicant's passport application request is sent by passport officer directly to senior superintendent of police officer and from there it is forwarded to LIU(local intelligence unit)/police station.
- An email is sent to the applicant.
- Investigation by LIU police officer :-
- LIU (Local Intelligence Unit) Police informs the applicant that they are coming to his/her address for police verification process and they verify the applicant's documents and address.
- The local police verify the applicant's identity, address and background, and verify criminal records.
- Report prepared by LIU police officer:-
- After verification the LIU officer submits the report to the RPO (Regional Passport Office).
- If the report is positive then the Regional Passport Officer initiates the request for printing of passport.
- If the report is negative then the Regional Passport Officer stops the printing of the passport and it does not start until the applicant goes to the RPO (Regional Passport Office) and explains the reason for the report being negative. After that the LIU again does the police verification process.
Documents for police verification :-
- Applicant's photo file from Passport Office
- Aadhar Card/Voter ID/Driving License (Proof of Identity and Address)
- Bank Passbook/Electricity/Water Bill (Proof of Address)
- PAN Card/Birth Certificate or 10th Marksheet (Proof of Date of Birth)
- Old Passport (if renewing)
Time taken for police verification :-
Police verification takes around 7 to 8 days.
Reasons for rejection of police verification :
- If your old criminal record is found. And you have hidden it.
- If you do not live at the address you have given.
- If you are not found at home on that day.
- If you have given wrong documents.
- If you have behaved rudely with the police.
- If you have entered your information incorrectly.
Police Verification approved/rejected status:
- Police Verification approved or rejected status can be checked from online passport seva website by login.Both statuses can be known to you online
- If you are a government officer and your passport has arrived earlier and police verification is done later then you can visit RPO (Regional Passport Office) to check the positive report.
- In case of negative report, RPO (Regional Passport Office) sends a letter to the applicant.
Solutions to avoid police verification rejection:-
- You have to submit all your documents correctly.
- You should be present at home at the time of police verification.
- You should avoid rude behavior with the police personnel.
- If you fail in police verification then you have to take an appointment at the regional passport office and tell them the reason for rejection.
