- The passport application form is submitted online through the Passport Seva Portal. The application form can be submitted in two modes: Normal or Tatkal.
- During the entire process from registration to passport delivery, applicants receive various SMS or emails on their registered mobile number and Email ID. These alerts provide updates on the status of their application.
Here we have shared some stages when an applicant receives SMS/Email.
1. Email for Online Registration
During online registration on the Passport Seva Portal, applicants receive a verification email to authenticate their submitted email ID. For this, users receive a four-digit OTP, which they must enter to verify the email address. After submitting the OTP, your account is successfully created.

2. Email After Successful Account Activation
The password created during registration remains valid for 90 days from the date of creation. After this period, users must reset their password. Upon successful password reset, the user will receive a confirmation via Email.

3. Email and SMS Upon Booking an Appointment
While submitting the passport application form, users must select an appointment date and time at their nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK). Once the date and time are confirmed, users receive an SMS and email. The email also includes the appointment details as an attachment.

4. Reminder Email for Appointment Date
Two days before your appointment, you will receive a system-generated email mentioning the date and time of the appointment.

5. Token Number SMS
On the day of the appointment, after checking in, the users will receive an SMS containing their token number. Using this token number, the applicant can proceed in the queue for further processing.

6 SMS After File Acceptance
Once the concerned PSK or POPSK accepts the application file, its confirmation is sent through an SMS. This message also informs the applicants that their application has been granted for pre-police verification.

7. Email and SMS for Police Verification Request
Users receive an SMS and Email once the police verification request is forwarded to the police department. The email contains the applicant's file number and details of the police department. It also advised, if the police verification is not completed within three weeks, the applicant should contact the respective police department.

8. SMS to Track Status
After the completion of the police verification procedure, users receive an SMS indicating that they can track the status of their passport by sending an SMS. The SMS also notifies a process to check the passport status via SMS.

9. Passport Dispatch SMS
Once the passport is printed and dispatched from the Regional Passport Office (RPO), the user receives an SMS notification, which includes the passport number, the date of dispatch, and the speed post tracking number.

10. SMS from India Post
India Speed Post usually send two to three SMS updates to the user, including the passport tracking number.

11. Passport Delivery SMS
Once the passport is delivered, the applicant will receive a confirmation through SMS.

Do users also receive SMS/Email for any error or for a report not clear?
Apart from the above situation, users also receive an Email or SMS if there is an error in the passport or if the police verification report is not clear.
12. Police Report Not Clear Notification
If a user's police verification report is not clear, they receive an email within 2-3 days. The same information is updated by the respective RPO in their online passport account. If any user receives a passport before police verification, they are advised to check their account and check for such an email.

13. Passport Application Closure Warning
If a passport application has been pending for 8 to 9 months without further action, the RPO may send users an email and a physical letter. This will ask you to submit the required documents to complete the application process. If not done within the given time frame, the application will be closed, and the submitted fee will not be refunded.

14. Email Notification for Password Reset
Applicants who forget their login password or it expired can reset it online through the Passport Seva Portal. After successfully resetting the password, they receive a confirmation email.
