Diplomatic Passport

  • A diplomatic passport is a special passport generally issued to government officials and diplomats for their international travel. In simple terms, it is known as Type D.
  • Under international law, this passport comes with certain privileges and exemptions, such as visa exemptions, priority access to services, and other benefits.
  • A Diplomatic Passport is issued by the Minister of External Affairs MEA).
  • It is of Maroon (Dark Brown) in colour and contains 28 pages.
  • Its issuance doesn't require any charge.
  • This passport makes international travel easier and comfortable for diplomats. It shows that the holder is on official government duty and is entitled to certain privileges.
  • A diplomatic passport remains valid until the person holding this passport is serving. Once the official assignment ends, it must be surrendered to the MEA.
  • Diplomatic Passport holders and their luggage are generally exempt from regular checks at the airport.

✅ Eligibility for Diplomatic Passport

  • Ministers of the Indian Government, senior officials, and persons holding diplomatic status.
  • Indian Ambassadors and diplomatic staff.
  • Officers included in the official delegations.
  • Government representative who represents India abroad.

✅ Validity of Diplomatic Passport

A Diplomatic Passport is valid for 5 years.

  • The application can be submitted online through Passport Seva Portal.
  • For this, applicants need to fill out the application form with all details and documents.

💰Fees

Applicants are not required to pay any fees for the issuance of a Diplomatic Passport.

📄Documents required for Diplomatic Passport

  • A copy of the submitted application form.
  • Political/ PMO Clearance (if applicable)
  • Official Identity Proof
  • Certificate from the head of the office.
  • Request letter from the orwarding officer.
  • For reissue applications
    • Original Diplomatic/ Official Passport for cancellation.
    • In case it is kept safely in the custody of MEA, bring the surrender certificate or safe custody certificate./
    • Bring original cancellation certificate, if already cancelled by the MEA.
  • Other Required documents.
