LIU (Local Intelligence Unit) Police
- Each district in a state has its police department, which consists of various units to handle different responsibilities. One of these is the Intelligence Department, which is popularly known as the LIU.
- LIU stands for Local Intelligence Unit Police, which functions as the intelligence wing of the police department.
- The LIU Police operated under the supervision of SP or DSP level officer level rank officer, who is in charge of the unit.
- Unlike other police units, the LIU is primarily involved on gathering and investigating intelligence information.
- LIU reports directly to the SSP or SP.
Role of LIU Police in Passport Verification
Apart from intelligence work, the LIU Police also plays an important role in Passport issuance.
- Once the documentation stage is completed at the PSK/POPSK, the Passport application goes through a Police Verification stage.
- Police Verification in Passport is mainly carried out by the LIU Police.
- During verification, they check the background of the applicant, including
- Applicant's Address: To confirm whether the applicant resides at the given address or not.
- Applicant Background: To check applicant involvement in any criminal activity.
- Documentation: Along with this, they also verify the authenticity of the documents.
- Additional information: They also collects information from the neighbours.
- Based on their investigation, the LIU prepares a detailed report and submits it to the SP office.
- The SP office renew and analyses the report before forwarding it to the RPO (Regional Passport Office) with appropriate remarks.
- After receiving a satisfactory report from the LIU, the RPO start processing the passport printing.
List of LIU team and their responsibilities
- The LIU police team consists of an Inspector/Sub-Inspector (SI), a Head Constable, a Clerk/Reporting Staff, Constable/Assistant. It usually consists of 8 to 15 people, but in a big district, there are more. They work at different levels.
- Inspector / Sub-Inspector (SI) – Leads the team, prepares reports.
- Head Constable / Constable – Goes to the field and collects information.
- Clerk/Reporting Staff- Data entry, report typing, and record maintenance.
- Cyber/Technical staff (in some districts) – do digital surveillance, social media scanning.
- It also includes support staff who help with other administrative tasks.
The work of LIU is to collect confidential information, maintain law and order in the district, prevent crime and maintain peace, law and order in political activities, monitor, and investigate.
