Police Verification Status After Receiving Passport

By pradeep , 5 August 2025

Passport police verification status can be checked either online or offline. The online status can be viewed from the Passport Seva Portal.

  • Generally, passport police verification is conducted in two ways.
    • For General Passport Applications: Police verification is done before the passport is issued.
    • For Tatkal Application or Government Employees: Police verification is done after the passport is issued.

Police Verification Before Passport Issuance

If your passport application falls under the general scheme, the police verification is conducted before the passport is issued. You can check the status online through the Passport Seva Portal.

Based on the report received from the LIU, the concerned RPO (Regional Passport Office) updates the status online as either 'Clear' or 'Not Clear'. In case of a 'Not Clear' status, the RPO also send an email to the applicant.

Online procedure to Check Police Verification Status

  • Open the Passport Seva Portal.
  • Click on 'Track Application Status'.
  • Select the 'Application Type' from the drop-down menu.
  • Enter your file number and date of birth.
  • Tap on the 'Track Status' to view your police verification status.

Police Verification After Passport Issuance

  • Generally, RPO issues a passport before conducting police verification of a passport application received under the Tatkal scheme or submitted by a Government employee.
  • The police verification for such a passport is conducted afterwards. Applicants in this category cannot check the police verification status online, as it can only be checked offline by following the given methods: -
    • Visit the Police Headquarters or the LIU (Local Intelligence Unit) office to inquire about the status.
    • Visit the Regional Passport Office (RPO).
    • If the report is not clear, applicants will receive an email from the officials within 2-3 days.
