Passports are made in two categories

Passports in India are generally made under two schemes: the Normal Passport scheme and the Tatkal Passport scheme. Both scheme have their benefits, which can be availed by the individuals depending on their requirements. Below, we have shared some common differences between the two.

Normal Passport

  • Passport applications submitted under the normal scheme usually take more time.
  • Generally, a passport is issued within 20 to 25 days from the date of application.
  • However, this also depends on the appointment date, which could be anywhere from 4 to 5 days and even 15 to 20 days, depending on your location.
  • After the completion of the appointment stage, police verification is typically completed within 6 to 8 days.
  • After successful police verification, a passport under the normal scheme takes around 10 to 15 days to be processed.
  • The printed passport is then sent to your address via Speed Post, which generally delivers it within 2 to 3 days.
  • Normal passport fees are less compared to the Tatkal scheme.

Tatkal Passport

  • Passport applications submitted under the Tatkal scheme are processed faster than those under the Normal scheme.
  • Under the Tatkal scheme, passports are generally issued within 10 to 15 days from the date of application.
  • Appointments under the Tatkal scheme are usually scheduled within 2 to 3 days.
  • In this scheme, the police verification is completed within 2 to 3 days.
  • After successful police verification, the passport is generally issued within 7 to 8 days.
  • To process the request quickly, an additional passport fees need to be paid by the applicants along with some extra documents.

Police Clearance Certificate

  • Generally, a Police Clearance Certificate takes around 15 to 20 days to be issued after the appointment at the passport office.
  • The appointment date for the PCC depends on the availability of slots.
  • Police verification itself takes 3-5 days.
  • After successful police verification, it takes around 6 to 7 days for the certificate to be printed and dispatched.
  • The PCC is sent to your address by speed post, which usually delivers within 2-3 days.
