• Any update or change of particulars in a passport must be done through the passport renewal process. Such a process can be completed under the normal category.
• Any changes or updates to the passport cannot be done under the Tatkal category.

Ques 1. How can I update my name after marriage or divorce?

Answer: You must renew your passport to update your name after marriage or divorce. It requires two public notices, one in the local and one in the national newspaper. In case of a marriage, a marriage certificate is required; in its absence, both spouses must submit a joint declaration using Annexure J. In case of divorce, submit the divorce decree or certificate issued by the court.

Ques 2. Is the process different for a name change due to marriage, divorce or legal name change?

Answer: The process is usually similar for all cases, but documents differ. After marriage, applicants need to submit a Marriage Certificate, Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, 10th Certificate, and an Old Passport. Whereas, after divorce, applicants must produce a divorce decree along with other supporting documents. For a legal name change, a public notice in two newspapers is mandatory, along with other supporting documents.

Ques 3. If I want to change my wife's name in my passport, what documents should I submit?

Answer : It varies as per the cases

1. Normal Correction (printing error)- Submit your wife's passport and make sure that your name is added as her spouse.
2. After Divorce and Remarriage: Submit the divorce decree and the marriage certificate for the new marriage.
3. After death/Separation of first wife and remarriage: Submit the death or separation certificate of the first wife, and the marriage certificate of the new marriage.
