While renewing a passport, you can update or add a new emergency contact. For this, you need to apply for a passport or its renewal online through the Passport Seva Portal.
Adding an Emergency number to a passport is mandatory
- In case of any type of emergency, the Indian Embassy in a foreign country may contact the person listed as emergency contact.
- During police verification, if your primary number is not reachable, LIU officials may contact you through this number.
- If there is any issue while processing your passport, you will be contacted through this emergency number.
- If your passport is lost or stolen abroad, the Indian Embassy may use this number.
- In case of a medical emergency during international travel, the Indian Embassy may contact this emergency number for assistance.
Things to keep in mind while adding an emergency number
- Always provide the number of such a person who is available and does not change their mobile number frequently.
- The mobile number must be active, and the person can answer the call promptly.
- You can provide the number of a friend or family member, whether they are residing in India or abroad.
Note: Avoid adding the number of someone who usually travels with you, such as your spouse or travel partner. In case of an emergency, the Indian embassy won't be able to contact your family member for assistance.
