During passport police verification, the police usually check your address record for the last 3 to 5 years. The Local Intelligence Unit (LIU) also verifies whether you have been residing at the current address for the last three years or not.

We often make small mistakes while applying for a passport, which can lead to application rejection, rescheduling of appointment after a long wait, or even multiple visits to the passport office- all of which delay the passport process.

Here are some mistakes applicants usually make during the passport application process.

🏛Indian Embassy

• An Indian Embassy is an official representative of the Government of India in a foreign country. Its primary objective is to assist Indian citizens residing in that country and to strengthen the diplomatic, cultural, business, and political relations between the two nations.
• India has around 219 diplomatic missions across the world, including embassies, consulates, high commissions, and other offices.

Under the Normal Scheme

• If your passport is lost, you must get it renewed or reissued. For this, you must obtain an affidavit from the court and file a Police FIR regarding the lost passport.
• Apply online for passport renewal and provide all the details of the lost passport.
• In case you don't have a copy or any details of the lost passport, you must obtain it from the RPO (Regional Passport Office), and then visit the Passport Seva Kendra with the required documents.

If the Father is Living Abroad

• If the father is living abroad, he must provide a SON certificate and Annexure 'D' for the minor's passport application.
• This certificate must be attested by the Indian Embassy or Consulate in the country where the father resides.
• In this certificate, the father declares that he has no objection to the issuance of a passport for his child.

For a name change

• If your name has changed, you will need to update it in your passport by filling out the passport renewal application form.
• For this, you must publish two public notices in the newspapers (one in a local and one in a national newspaper) mentioning the name you wish to use.
• Also, you must provide an updated ID proof that indicates your new name. For this, you can submit your Aadhaar card, PAN Card, or Driving License, along with your old passport.

• If you are not planning to travel soon and feel that you do not need it right now, it can be renewed after its expiry date.
• However, if you anticipate travelling abroad in the coming months, you must get it renewed by submitting the requisite documents.
• With a renewed passport, you are ready for any unexpected international travel.
• Generally, passport renewal should be done within 6 months to 1 year of its expiry.

• To avoid any travel disruptions, you must renew your passport at least six months to one year before its expiry date.
• For most international travels, your passport must have a validity of at least 6 months. If your passport's validity is less than six months, you may face issues while travelling.
• If your passport has only two or three blank pages left, it needs to be renewed.

✅ Passport Renewal process (If it is more than 10 years old)

• If you want to renew a passport issued more than 10 years ago, you can apply for renewal under the Normal Passport Category.
• To do this, you need to submit an online application through the Passport Seva Portal.
• For renewal, you must submit your old passport, address proof, birth date proof, and other supporting documents.

Documents Required for Name Change

• For name change, issue two public notices (one in the local and one in the national newspaper)
• Identity and Address Proof
  • Aadhaar Card.
  • PAN Card.
  • Voter ID.
  • Bank Passbook.
• Marriage Certificate (If applicable)
  • Annexure J form, if a marriage certificate is not available.
• Proof of Birth (anyone)
  • Birth Certificate
  • PAN Card
  • 10th Marksheet/Certificate

If your name or surname is different before marriage and changed after marriage, you can apply under the normal passport category, as this cannot be processed under the Tatkal scheme.

• Ques 1. How will I receive my passport once it is ready?

Answer: Once the passport is ready, the RPO will deliver it to the address mentioned in your application form via speed post. The postman will collect it from the post office and deliver it to your address. You are not required to visit the RPO or the post office to collect it. You must be present at home at the time of delivery. In your absence, the passport can also be received by your parents or spouse.

Ques.-1 After submitting the online application form, how can I correct its discrepancy?

Answer: It is impossible to correct details in the application form once it has been submitted. However, the correction can be made on the day of your appointment, where you have to request a correction form and inform the officials at the desk about the corrections. Such a correction can only be made for limited entries; for major changes, you will need to close this ongoing application file and start with a new file with the correct information.

Ques 1. Is it mandatory for both parents to be present during the passport apppcation process?

Answer : Yes, in case of the Tatkal apppcation process, both parents must be present, while in the normal process, either of the parents can be present.

Ques 2. During a minor passport apppcation, if any of the parents is not available or is abroad, what process should be undertaken?

Passport Renewal Process in India After Renewal Abroad

• If you have renewed your passport abroad and now wish to renew it again after returning to India, you can do so by going through a process similar to the regular passport renewal procedure.
• However, this process cannot be carried out under the Tatkal category.
• The passport renewal can be done online through the Passport Seva Portal.
