Difference between Passport Renewal and Re-issue

Published:

There is no difference between passport renewal and reissue, as both are treated the same. The Passport Department doesn't reissue a passport under any condition. A passport is issued only once when you apply for the first time. After that, you can apply for renewal to make changes or if the passport has expired.

Important Points

  • Passport renewal is done under several situations,
    • If the validity has expired
    • If the passport is lost or stolen, or
    • If you want to update the name, address, photo or other details.
  • Every time a passport is renewed, it is issued with a new number.
  • The passport renewal process is similar to applying for a fresh passport, except that the old passport must be submitted for documentation.
  • Police verification is also carried out during the passport renewal process.
